Set on a steeply sloping site in Palm Beach, in the Northern Beaches Council zone, occupied by a modest cottage, this project called for a bold yet sensitive design response. The clients required a flexible home that could accommodate various family groups and large gatherings while providing intimacy and privacy when needed.
To meet this complex brief, Playoust Churcher Architects designed a four-level contemporary residence that integrates into the gradient of the site. At its heart is a central grass courtyard, with individually crafted spaces around it to foster connection, light, and flow.
The design embraced robust concrete, steel, and glass materials, softened by a warm, natural sandstone cladding and timber palette. This combination grounded the home in its environment while delivering elegance and comfort.
The completed residence is expansive and inviting, designed for flexibility, connection, and privacy. The split levels provide dynamic living arrangements, offering areas for shared family time and retreats for solitude or smaller gatherings.
Every space was carefully considered to maximise the site’s outlook. Expansive views are framed throughout the home, while at the same time, intimate vantage points were designed to create private sanctuaries. The natural finishes complement the rugged beauty of the setting, lending the home a sense of timelessness and belonging.
The result is a crafted family residence that marries structure with softness, scale with intimacy, and practicality with beauty. This property is a worthy example of Playoust Churcher Architects’ ability to transform challenging sites into extraordinary homes.

“We provided a very detailed brief on the design and the requirements both in terms of how it would support our family as it grew over time in addition to the design features that were important to us. We were thrilled with the concept and design they delivered. It ticked all the boxes.
We felt very confident the team understood our brief in terms of the design and how we hoped to live. They also showed an understanding of the financial requirements and cost issues that are really important whenever you undertake any renovation project.”

“When Brett and John came they just listened. John is so talented that we just trust him. I told John what I wanted our home to look like and to go for it. John can draw the designs upside down all by hand and you know exactly what he is doing. He is really talented and that was very obvious from the beginning. He is so passionate about what he does.
They were respectful of costs and just listened to what we wanted. There is a lot to say for architects that listen. The house works perfectly with our needs – there is a flow that works beautifully.”
