Curl Curl is one of the northern beaches’ most rewarding suburbs. Known for its 1.2km surf break and lagoon lifestyle, it is no surprise that real estate here is tightly held. The Northern Beaches Council also holds the character of the area close and is very protective of any residential development. Multi-dwelling development, while not discouraged, comes with a framework that requires professional oversight and a thorough understanding of the residential planning and building compliance. Multi dwelling projects are a significant investment, and staying within budget while completing projects of architectural significance that meet the owners’ needs is why having an architectural process is so critical.
The outcome
The client’s brief was to maximise the site’s potential with two contemporary styled homes that spoke to the residents’ environmental factors and expectations. Height restrictions required careful treatment to enable uninterrupted views of the coast and lagoon without obstructing the existing views for the neighbouring properties. Through intelligent orientation and construction geometry, the Playoust Churcher team incorporated large screen style windows to maximise vistas and light, and incorporated exterior materials representing the essence of beachside living, blending each property into the landscape.
