This charming bungalow in Hunters Hill had been compromised by a series of poorly planned extensions that left the interiors disjointed and lacking spatial flow. The owners wanted a modern extension to restore functionality and create comfortable, connected living spaces.
The design approach focused on reworking and replanning the ground floor to establish a cohesive layout. A new kitchen, meals, and family area were introduced, flowing to the north-facing rear yard. Outdoor living was prioritised with a new pool, cabana, and entertaining area, while a generous master suite and study brought balance to the ground level.
To accommodate the clients’ additional needs, the first floor was extended to include a guest retreat, three additional bedrooms, and a large study area. Every element was considered to introduce natural light, connectivity, and a sense of flow between spaces.
The transformation turned a fragmented house into a stylish contemporary home with strong functionality and spatial coherence. The interiors now open fluidly onto outdoor entertainment areas, allowing the family to enjoy a lifestyle that blends indoor comfort with alfresco living.
The interiors, designed by Tonia Polorotoff of An Interior Thing, complemented the architectural framework with a relaxed and welcoming aesthetic. The result is a home that balances modern sophistication with a warm, inviting atmosphere. A true reflection of the clients’ vision brought to life.

“We provided a very detailed brief on the design and the requirements both in terms of how it would support our family as it grew over time in addition to the design features that were important to us. We were thrilled with the concept and design they delivered. It ticked all the boxes.
We felt very confident the team understood our brief in terms of the design and how we hoped to live. They also showed an understanding of the financial requirements and cost issues that are really important whenever you undertake any renovation project.”

“Playoust Churcher Architects had an inherent understanding of the brief, and the design created a classic Roseville family home with wonderful proportions, depth and detail.
It’s now recognised as a stand-out in the area – people slow down and stare as they drive past.”

“When Brett and John came they just listened. John is so talented that we just trust him. I told John what I wanted our home to look like and to go for it. John can draw the designs upside down all by hand and you know exactly what he is doing. He is really talented and that was very obvious from the beginning. He is so passionate about what he does.
They were respectful of costs and just listened to what we wanted. There is a lot to say for architects that listen. The house works perfectly with our needs – there is a flow that works beautifully.”
LisaYes. Hunters Hill is one of Sydney’s oldest suburbs and includes strict heritage overlays—especially in precincts like Woolwich and Tarban Creek—managed by Hunters Hill Council. These controls govern building form, materials, and streetscape character.
This home was carefully redesigned to respect the suburb’s historic character while introducing modern spatial planning, light-filled interiors, and seamless connection with outdoor spaces. The result is a refined interpretation of local heritage.
Homes in Hunters Hill are subject to steep slope controls, height restrictions, heritage façade requirements, and sensitive stormwater management rules. We navigate these constraints through considered site analysis and compliant design strategies.
We preserve key architectural features—like original rooflines or façade proportions—while redesigning interiors for light, flow, and liveability. Our approach focuses on balancing character with contemporary comfort.
